Summit Hike on Teide Volcano with the Cable Car

Spain's highest peak, black lava fields, the smell of sulphur and views over Tenerife and the neighbouring islands from 3,718 metres above sea level. This is not just another scenic tour. This is a hike right up to the crater of an active volcano that last erupted around 1,000 years ago.

Itinerary

The tour begins with a ride on the cable car up to 3,555 metres above sea level. From there, you follow the Telesforo Bravo trail with your guide, hiking right up to the crater. Along the way, black lava fields, remnants of past eruptions, and views taking in the whole of Tenerife and the neighbouring islands. At the summit, fumaroles rise from inside the volcano along with the distinctive smell of sulphur. A place that looks like another planet, with no equivalent anywhere else in the Canary Islands.

The itinerary also includes admission to the Science and Legend exhibition at the Teide Cable Car Visitor Centre, where you can learn about both the scientific facts behind the volcano's formation and the legends of the Guanches, the island's original inhabitants, who believed the eruptions were battles between the gods.

What's Included

The permit to hike to Teide's summit, the return cable car ride, the guided trek, and admission to the exhibition at the Visitor Centre.

Fitness and Health Requirements

The summit hike is a demanding round trip of around 2 hours up and down, requiring good physical fitness. The tour is suitable for those aged 6 and over. It is not recommended for pregnant women or people with cardiovascular conditions. If the guide judges that a participant's fitness is not sufficient for their safety, they may ask that person to leave the trail or not take part in the activity.

You must show your ID card or passport at the trailhead. It's worth bringing warm clothing, water, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Summit Access Permit

Reaching the summit requires a special permit issued by Teide National Park in each participant's name. Final booking confirmation is only sent once this permit has been obtained. If the permit is not granted and the booking cannot be confirmed, an alternative date or a full refund will be offered.

Because of the way the National Park authority's permit system works, once you book this summit tour and we confirm it, it cannot be cancelled under any circumstances.

The tour may be cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
